Tanque Verde is a census-designated place near Tucson in Pima County in the US state of Arizona . The city has an area of 85.1 km² and had 16,195 inhabitants at the 2000 census . The population density is 190.2 per km². Tanque Verde means green container in Spanish .
history
Tanque Verde used to be a farming village. The name comes from the algae that were found in a body of water in the city. The first inhabitants of the area were the Apaches . In 1886 the Tanque Verde School District was founded.
Demographics
The 16,195 inhabitants of Tanque Verde found in the 2000 census lived in 5810 households; including 4903 families. The population density was 190 per km². 6056 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population were 94.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.6% American Indian, 1.3% Asian, and 1.5% from other races; 1.7% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.
Of the 5810 households, 35.2% had children under the age of 18; 12.2% were single households. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.01.
The population was divided into 25.3% under 18 years of age, 4.9% from 18 to 24 years of age, 22.7% from 25 to 44 years of age, 35.1% from 45 to 64 years of age and 12.0% from 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years.
