Juwenali from Kursk

Juwenali (born: Spiridon Alexejewitsch Tarasov , Russian Спиридон Алексеевич Тарасов * 29. April 1929 in Bolschemetschetny (Большемечетный), Rajon Semikarakorsk ; † 13. January 2013 in Kursk ) was a Russian Orthodox Metropolitan of Kursk.

In 1949 he entered the seminary in Saratov . On August 2, 1953, he was ordained a deacon in the name of Spiridon Tarasov from the Metropolitan of Rostov, Benjamin (Fedtschenkow), and two days later he was ordained a priest. After working as a pastor, he became rector of the Shakhty Ascension Chapel in 1958 . In 1966 he finished his studies at the Moscow Theological Academy with a degree in theology. On June 26, 1968 he was ordained a monk in the name of Juwenali. In early 1970 he became rector of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Penza , member of the Diocesan Council of Churches and dean. In November 1975 he was raised to the rank of Archimandrite .

On November 16, 1975 he was ordained bishop in the cathedral of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery by the Metropolitan of Leningrad, Nicodemus (Rotow) , and appointed bishop of Voronezh and Lipetsk . On July 16, 1982 he was appointed Archbishop of Irkutsk and Chita . On December 26, 1984 he was appointed Archbishop of Kursk and Belgorod .

By decree of His Holiness Alexius II , Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia and head of the Russian Orthodox Church , he was appointed Metropolitan on February 25, 2000. On August 17, 2004, the Holy Synod granted the health-related retirement petition and was awarded the Schima .

He was an honorary citizen of Kursk and the Kursk region and has received many other church and state awards.
