Tarchuna ( Georgian ტარხუნა , German tarragon ) is a Georgian carbonated soft drink that tastes like tarragon and is traditionally green in color. It was invented by Georgian pharmacist Mitrophane Laghidze in the capital Tbilisi in 1887 when he was adding carbonated water to his tarragon syrup. It was not until 1981 that the industrial mass production of tarchuna began in the Soviet Union . From this point on, the drink became increasingly popular. Since 2007 Tarchuna has also been exported to other countries such as Greece, Israel, Latvia, Belgium and the USA.

The name is derived from a popular name for tarragon in the Georgian language , which, however, is also common in other languages such as Arabic , Turkish and languages spoken in the Caucasus and the Balkans .

Tarchuna as a woodruff lemonade

In Russia , tarchun (Тархун) is increasingly being used to denote a green soft drink with a woodruff flavor . In Germany, this can also be obtained from shops selling Russian specialties or supermarkets with an Eastern European segment. The ingredients of the woodruff lemonade are mostly water , sugar , carbonic and citric acid , as well as colorings and flavors .

Tarchuna as a brand

In a trademark dispute between the companies OÜ Acerra and AS Tallinna Karastusjoogid , the Estonian Ministry of Environment and Communication decided that the term Tarchuna is used colloquially for the corresponding drink and therefore cannot be protected as a trademark under Estonian law.
