Tarek Eltayeb (* 1959 in Cairo ) is a Sudanese-Austrian writer and economist with Sudanese roots. He grew up in Egypt and now lives in Vienna . In addition to his writing activities, Tarek Eltayeb teaches at the University of Vienna , the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems and the University of Graz .

Life

Tarek Eltayeb was born in Cairo to Sudanese parents. He studied business administration at Ain Shams University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981. He then worked as an auditor in Cairo until 1984 before spending six months in Iraq. Eltayeb has lived in the Austrian capital Vienna since 1984, where he began writing in 1985. Tarek Eltayeb studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and received his doctorate in social and economic sciences in 1997 with his dissertation "The transfer of ethics through technology in the struggle between identity and profit" at the Institute for Economic Philosophy. He financed his studies with numerous jobs, including as a newspaper wholesaler, prospectus distributor, dishwasher, language teacher and later as an interpreter.

Tarek Eltayeb was Lower Austria's ambassador for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008.

Tarek Eltayeb is married to the Arabist and Islamic scholar Ursula Eltayeb, who also translates his texts from Arabic into German.
