Taringa! (abbreviated T! ) is an online community with a web forum and functions of social networks in Spanish , which was founded in 2004 by the three Argentines Alberto Nakayama and Matías and Hernán Botbol.

The forum is not subject to a specific topic - with the exception that erotic topics have to be posted in a separate, age-restricted section called Poringa - and is often used for link sharing, including content that is problematic in terms of copyright.

Dissemination and use

Taringa! is one of the most popular web forums worldwide; According to Alexa Internet , in 2008 it was of the pure forums (excluding further social networks) with the second highest traffic worldwide after vagos.es , at times it was among the 200 most popular websites; on July 15, 2012 it was in 217th place. In March 2008 it had more than 400,000 registered participants and more than 500,000 page views per day. In May 2012, it had 70 million users, according to an article in the La Nación newspaper . In Argentina, it was the second most popular online community after Facebook in 2013, according to the market research agency comScore .

According to Alexa.com, most of the users come from the country of origin Argentina. Besides are Chileans , Uruguayans and Mexicans also strongly represented. In Argentina, the site was ranked 10th in popularity in March 2008 and 3rd on Argentina-based websites, 14th in Uruguay and 20 to 100 in almost all other Latin American countries.

Organization and structure

The forum uses its own software, which is based on the English-language forum Teoti.net and differs from most other forums in that the threads on the main page are not sorted by topic, but by popularity, time and user, the respective sections are represented by symbols.

The contributions of the users can be rated with the help of point accounts, but this function is only reserved for experienced users. New users are initially only allowed to join the discussion in their own newcomers' section until they have collected 70 points. This is to avoid nonsense postings and purely polemical contributions and to ensure that all full members bring interesting topics.

Taringa has overtaken its role model Teoti in popularity.

reception

Taringa was mentioned in numerous media in Argentina and often recommended as a surfing tip. Because of its high number of users, the Clarín newspaper considered it to be partly responsible for the decline in the circulation of erotic magazines in Argentina, as the erotic section in particular is very popular.

Extensions

Over time, Taringa integrated other services that went beyond mere forum functionality. Over time, it approached more extensive social networks. However, the forum function continues to be by far the most important part of the website.

  • Poringa is a pornography and erotic forum that is separated from the other Taringa sections for reasons of youth protection and can be reached via its own domain. However, the functionality is the same as the main forum.
  • Taringa Música was founded in 2011 as a platform for musicians who can use it to make their own recordings available to the community.

For a while, a photo hosting service was also offered under the name Fotoringa , but it was discontinued. As in most other web forums, other hosting services (e.g. Flickr or YouTube ) must be used when integrating multimedia files . Between 2007 and 2009, the blog platforms Bloringa and Hotinga were also offered. A wiki was also temporarily available at wiki.taringa.net .

Copyright Infringement Litigation

In 2010, a legal controversy arose as many Taringas users posted links to copyrighted content in their posts , especially files hosted by share hosts like Rapidshare or Megaupload . The founders were from Taringa! Accused of copyright infringement by various publishing houses and the Chamber of Commerce representing them, Cámara del Libro, involving the downloading of computer science and legal literature.

Taringa's defense argued that the rights holders should be offered a form to display illegal content and that the links should be deleted. However, liability for links to illegal material is not precisely regulated in Argentina. In October 2011, the competent court decided to accept the case. In the opinion of the court, they are jointly responsible for unlawful duplications by tolerating links to copyrighted material in the forum posts (see liability for interference ).

In March 2012 there was an agreement between Taringa! and the Cámara del Libro, where Taringa! obliged to improve the mechanisms to avoid copyright infringement and thus the plaintiff waived further prosecution.
