Tarsonemidae are a family of mites . Many of their species are considered to be plant pests.
features
The species of the family are small and reach a length of 0.1 to 0.3 millimeters in the adult stage . Your integument is relatively hard and appears shiny white. The physique is oval.
The fourth (rear) pair of legs is tripartite, in the males mostly more pronounced than the other pairs of legs, in the females, however, much thinner than these. The females have no tarsal claws on the fourth pair of legs, but rather a long, whip-shaped bristle each .
Way of life
Only a few genera of the Tarsonemidae such as Steneotarsonemus , Polyphagotarsonemus , Phytonemus , Floridotarsonemus and Tarsonemus attack higher plants. Most of the other genera can therefore be ruled out as causing damage to crops cultivated by humans. Their mouthparts are too weak to penetrate the outer layers of the plant organs. They feed on the thin-walled mycelia of mushrooms or algae . Acarapis woodi, on the other hand, parasitizes honey bees ( aracipiosis ).
