The pocket shark ( Mollisquama parini ) is a small species of shark from the Dalatiidae family . The holotype, at the same time the only known specimen of the species, was a growing female, had a body length of over 40 centimeters and was caught in the deep sea in the southeastern Pacific far off the coast of Chile . A second specimen, a just born male, only 14.2 cm long, was caught in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 . It differs from the holotype in the number of vertebrae and tooth morphology and has been assigned to a new species of the genus Mollisquama .

Appearance and characteristics

The pocket shark is a small shark with a known body length of over 40 centimeters, with the holotype being a not yet sexually mature female. It has an elongated body typical of the spiny dogfish relatives, the head is short and tapered with thick lips. The body color is brown throughout, the fins are lined with light.

It has no anal fin and two dorsal fins . The first dorsal fin begins far behind the end of the pectoral fins , directly in front of the pelvic fin attachment, and is about the same size as the second dorsal fin. The caudal fin is asymmetrical. The animals have five medium-sized gill slits , the last being about twice as long as the first, and a spray hole behind the eye. A noticeable slit-shaped opening at the base of the pectoral fin, the function of which is unknown. Compagno represents the possibility that a fluorescent secretion could be produced in the pocket behind .
