The Tasman Peninsula ( English Tasman Peninsula ) is a peninsula in the southeast of the Australian island of Tasmania , which is about 75 km southeast of Hobart .

The peninsula is located southwest of the Forestier Peninsula , which is connected to the Eaglehawk Neck . On the peninsula, which extends Tasman National Park , the coastline is divided by numerous bays, and it is by two places to UNESCO - heritage count for numerous tourists in the summer of interest.

The Tasman Peninsula is 19 km wide and 27 km long and covers approximately 520 km²; it is bounded by Storm Bay in the west and Norfolk Bay in the north and the Tasman Sea . Its highest point is 460 meters.

history

The peninsula is named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman , who was the first European to come to Tasmania. Before the European arrival, the Aborigines of the Pydairrerme clan lived in this area . The Pydairrerme were a clan of the larger Oyster Bay Aboriginal tribe who lived on Tasmania's east coast.

The first European settlement in Tasmania was Risdon Cove , which was abandoned and Port Arthur was subsequently established on the Tasman Peninsula. Port Arthur was established as a convict camp by the British colonial government, located in New South Wales on the Australian continent, who considered the remote island suitable for this purpose.

Trees grew on the peninsula which were particularly suitable for shipbuilding because of their size and the resistant wood. After Port Arthur was founded, a coal deposit was discovered on the peninsula and a convict mining was carried out at Saltwater Creek , on what is now Coal Mines Historic Site . Both Port Arthur and the coal mine have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since August 2010 due to their historical and cultural importance for the development of Australia . In particular, the more famous Port Arthur is frequented by tourists.

Tasmanian devil

The peninsula is also a sanctuary for the Tasmanian devils , who do not have devil facial tumor disease (DFTD), a contagious tumor disease of the face. There is a project at Taranna that is monitoring a population that is not sick, and since the peninsula is only connected to the mainland by a narrow land bridge, there is a good chance these animals will survive.

landscape

Rock formation on the coast of the peninsula

There are a number of shipwrecks on the rugged coastline. In the Tasman National Park , the natural beauties such as the Tasman Blowhole , the natural rock gate Tasman Arch , Devil's Kitchen at Eaglehawk Neck and the Remarkable Cave are attractions for tourists. The largest towns on Tasman Peninsula are Nubeena and Koonya , smaller towns are Premaydena , Highcroft and Stormlea .

Because of its location, the peninsula is exposed to the so-called Roaring Forties , which rule south of the 40th parallel, strong westerly winds. The climate is mild-temperate, the winters are mild. The peninsula offers good surfing opportunities at Cape Roaul , Roaring Beach and Shipstern Bluff .
