The Tasman River is an alpine braided rivers in the region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

The source of the river is in Mount Cook National Park and is the outflow of the Tasman Glacier and the Murchison Glacier . The Hooker Glacier and the Mueller Glacier also drain into the river via a short tributary .

It flows from the Southern Alps about 25 km to the south and then flows into the end of Lake Pukaki . The Tasman River thus forms part of the catchment area of ​​the Waitaki Hydroelectic Scheme hydropower project .
