Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh OBE MP (born October 5, 1970 in London ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). For her constituency of Ochil and South Perthshire , she sat in the British House of Commons from 2015 to 2017 .

Ahmed-Sheikh is married with four children and is a practicing Muslim . She is the founder and first chairman of the Scottish Asian Women's Association (SAWA).

Life

Ahmed-Sheikh was born in the Chelsea district of London , but grew up in Edinburgh . Her mother is of Welsh and Czech descent and is an actress for the Royal Shakespeare Company , her father is of Pakistani origin and was elected the first local councilor in Scotland for the Conservative Party . Ahmed-Sheikh studied law at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Strathclyde . During her honeymoon in Pakistan, she decided to become an actress and starred in several Pakistani series. After that, however, she decided to focus them on her family as well as her professional and political career. She became a partner in the Glasgow law firm Hamilton Burns .

Political career

Ahmed-Sheikh was a candidate for the Scottish Conservative Party in the Glasgow Govan constituency for the 1999 general election in Scotland . She did not receive a mandate, but as a young woman with a migrant background was seen as the new face and young hope of the conservatives. Among other things, she criticized the SNP's no to the NATO mission in Kosovo and its plans for tax increases. In 2000 she resigned from the Conservative Party on the basis of William Hague's “right-wing” statements about asylum seekers and initially became a member of the Labor Party before moving to the SNP that same year.

As a member of the Yes Scotland committee, she spoke out in favor of Scotland's independence from the United Kingdom in the September 2014 referendum . In the 2014 European elections , she ran for third place in the SNP's list, but thus missed the entry into the European Parliament . In the general election in May 2015 , she was elected to Parliament with 46% of the vote against the previous Labor MP Gordon Banks for the constituency of Ochil and South Perthshire . In the general election in June 2017, she was defeated by the conservative candidate Luke Graham .
