The Ossiacher Tauern ( Slovene : Osojske Ture , popularly simply Turje ) are a wooded mountain range in Carinthia between the Ossiacher See in the northwest and the Wörthersee in the southeast. The highest point of the Ossiacher Tauern is the Taubenbühel at 1069  m above sea level. A. At its western end, the Landskron castle ruins are visible from afar on a prominent hill . Not far from the castle, which has been revitalized as a restaurant and bird of prey observatory, you can walk along the Tauern hiking trail to the Jungfernsprung , a rock formation that descends steeply to Lake Ossiach, from which you have a magnificent view of the western part of the lake and the Gerlitze . A striking eye-catcher from Villach is an abandoned quarry, from which stones were quarried for river construction in Carinthia until a few years ago. There are also a number of old mine tunnels in the Ossiacher Tauern. Zinc and other ores were mined here centuries ago.

In the vernacular, the Ossiacher Tauern are also called The Little Tauern . In the hamlet of Tauern up on the hill is the Tauern Church . To the northeast is over the lead instead of the Prägrad Castle .

history

The Ossiach Abbey , conveniently located but wedged between Ossiacher See and Ossiacher Tauern, had little agricultural land in the immediate vicinity of the Abbey. So it used the Tauern plateau. The current use of the Ossiacher Tauern by the abbots of the 16th century, Reiner and Konrad, who intensified agriculture on the Tauern and began breeding horses, is largely determined. The horses were made available to the farmers with the aim of increasing their productivity.

The monastery was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II in 1783 and, along with the Tauernberg, became the property of the state. Horse breeding, however, was retained, at times cavalry horses were bred for military purposes.

In 1932 the Ossiacher Tauern was leased by the State Culture Council, the forerunner of the Chamber of Agriculture of Carinthia . The rearing of stallions was supplemented by rearing bulls. In 1935 the Chamber of Agriculture, which had now been established, bought the Ossiacher Tauern. Today (as of 2006), Norikers and Haflingers are mainly bred in the Ossiacher Tauern rearing farm.
