The hamlet of Tauern belongs to the municipality of Ossiach in Carinthia. It is located southeast of Ossiach at 926 m above sea level on the Ossiacher Tauern and has 14 inhabitants (VZ 2001) .

Filial church of Saint Anthony

The Tauernkirche on the Ossiacher Tauern is the only remaining branch church of the Ossiach Abbey , because the branch churches of Heiligen Gestade , about 1 km to the west, and Sankt Georgen, about just as far east of Ossiach, and St. Peter on the opposite bank of the lake, because of the poor building ground have long since perished around the lake.

This church was mentioned for the first time in 1290 as St. Thomas Church, and in 1519 a large-scale new building in late Gothic form was carried out by Magister Johannes, which Abbot Caspar Rainer had rebuilt in early Baroque style at the beginning of the 17th century. Nevertheless, the numerous windows are ogival, while the west and south portals have round arches and were appropriately animated by fillets.

A round apse adjoins the hall-like nave on the east side with the same width, while the west end of the nave is separated by a wall as a vestibule and above it as a gallery. The roof turret with a pyramid helmet rises above this part of the room.

The nave and apse, which merge into one another without a triumphal arch, are flatly covered. These plaster ceilings are framed in a subtle way by a round bar cornice. The strikingly flat high altar, dated 1675, is impressive. Its early baroque cartilage is largely transformed into high baroque tendrils. The altarpiece by Sebastian Starnberger shows Saint Anthony with the divine child. The top relief, on the other hand, depicting St. Thomas, is older and probably comes from the previous high altar . It thus reveals that the St. Thomas patronage of the church must have continued after it was rebuilt in the 16th century and the Baroque style at the beginning of the 17th century, and that the church was only consecrated to St. Anthony in the second half of the 19th century. The north-facing wall altar dated 1767 is also kept flat. Despite the fact that it was made in the second half of the 17th century, it is decorated with foliage and ribbonwork . Its altarpiece between volutes pilasters shows the holy peasant patrons Isidor and Notburga , the top picture shows Saint Oswald , and the tabernacle also dates from the 17th century . The same applies to the pulpit, whose polygonal basket with volute pilasters and flat carved ornaments stands on a wooden column. The sound cover has no jewelry worth mentioning. Several large-format paintings from the 17th century hang in the nave, all of which are attributed to the master of the high altar painting. They depict the resurrection of Christ , the Assumption of Our Lady and the feast of Pentecost . Only one painting dates from the 18th century: it shows the queen of heaven standing on the crescent moon .

Up until the 1950s there were pilgrimages and petition processions to Antoni (June 13th) from Köstenberg, Glanhofen-St. Nikolai and Ossiach take place, since the 1980s the annual Tauern Festival of the neighborhoods, which takes place in June, has become a popular tradition again.
