Baptismal font of St. Michael (Altenstadt near Schongau)
The baptismal font of the Catholic parish church St. Michael in Altenstadt , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau , was created around 1200. The baptismal font , placed in the south aisle of the church since 1994, is on the Bavarian list of monuments as part of the church furnishings .
The archangel Michael , the enthroned Mother of God with the child, St. John the Baptist and the baptism of Jesus are carved out as reliefs on the chalice-shaped bowl . In between the representations of the evangelist symbols can be seen. Bearded men are shown below as symbols of the four rivers of paradise, the Euphrates and Tigris , Pishon and Gihon .
