Taunga (also: Tauga ) is an island in the Tongan archipelago of Vavaʻu . Taunga had around 39 residents in 2008.
geography
Taunga is located about south of the center of the archipelago, in the extension of Kapa Island . It is the northwest tip of an extensive reef, which also includes the islets of Pau , Ngau , Lekeleka and Tauta . The reef curves to the northeast and runs towards a headland of Vava, where the group of islands of Tapana is located. A short distance to the south and west are the islands of ʻEueiki , ʻEuakafa and Katafanga .
The island itself is divided into a larger northern part and a small southern part, which are connected by a narrow isthmus . In the bay between the two parts of the island, the island's settlement lies to the southwest.
climate
The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands of the Vava'u group, Taunga is occasionally hit by cyclones .
history
The island belongs to the noble family (Matapule) of the ʻAkauʻola . In 2007 the family leased the island to Warwick International Hotels and a hotel complex is to be built there together with the neighboring state island of Ngau.
