The association Tausche Bildung für Wohnen e. V. is a non-profit and multiple award-winning association based in Duisburg, founded in 2012 .

Goals and Activities

The association is committed to a society "in which people respect one another, learn from one another and create a peaceful environment and togetherness", and for "positive change in economically, culturally and structurally disadvantaged children and their families".

As educational mentors, young adults move to the district where they can live rent-free for at least one year, and in return look after disadvantaged children in the district after completing their training. Municipal and religious institutions such as mosques, churches, sports fields, gyms and youth centers are open - if possible free of charge - to the participants in the project. A central study and work space (“exchangeable”) also offers parents a point of contact for questions and advice.

In addition to their studies or training, students and trainees can work as part-time mentors for 8 hours per week, volunteers in the federal voluntary service or volunteer social year as full-time mentors with 40 hours per week. Each sponsor looks after two groups, each with four "own" sponsored children. The educational mentors are in the schools in the mornings, support the teachers there and get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the children, which they promote in small groups in the afternoons. The sponsors receive rent-free accommodation as well as legally stipulated pocket money and are trained before their assignment. Some of the sponsors are accommodated in a project-owned shared apartment. The sponsors usually stay in the project for one year and have the opportunity to extend their participation several times.

The concept is intended as a win-win-win situation for three sides: for the children, for the educational sponsors and for the disadvantaged district.

After the association was founded in 2012, the model was first implemented in Duisburg-Marxloh in 2014 . Around two thirds of the around 20,000 inhabitants there have a migration background (as of 2017); unemployment, dependency on transfer payments and vacancy rates for apartments and shops are high. The association members aimed to use their model to combat vacancy rates, to improve the level of education and to attract other social groups, including aspiring academics. The model was also implemented in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf in 2019 . The association offers its support in the implementation of similar projects in the form of social franchising in other cities.

financing

For needy families participation in the project is free; the association can use funds from the federal education and participation package for them.

Part of the start-up financing came from the Act for Impact main prize won in 2012 (40,000 euros). The association is supported by numerous foundations, companies, other partners and donations.

Media coverage

There were several reports about the association in national print media and television or video media.
