geography

The city of Taveta is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro on an approximately 25 by 15 km indentation in Kenya towards Tanzania , which is bordered in the north by Lake Chala and in the south by Lake Jipe . The air line between Berlin and Taveta is 6587 km.

history

Taveta first belonged to German East Africa . It was awarded to the British after 1890 and thus became part of British East Africa .

In 1914 Taveta was "a place consisting of a few small houses", but it was the only place on the British side of the border to the Uganda Railway to have a water point that was fed by Kilimanjaro . The place served as a border crossing point between British and German East Africa.

At the beginning of the First World War , Taveta was occupied on August 15, 1914 by German troops from German East Africa after a light battle. It was heavily fortified and had a telephone connection to the German military headquarters in Moschi .

Taveta during the First World War

For the water supply of the troops in Taveta, wells were tapped by a German dowser at Taveta. Taveta became the starting point for patrol operations and for other German advanced bases in British East Africa. The main aim of the German operations from Taveta and the advanced bases was the constant disruption of the British Uganda Railway by blowing up the tracks and trains. Towards the end of 1915, the bases in British East Africa supplied by Taveta had to be withdrawn as far as the Oldoroboberge, twelve kilometers east of Taveta, because of the scarcity of water in the steppe and the difficulties it caused with the supply of food. On February 12, 1916, there was a battle at Oldorobo . At the beginning of March 1916 Taveta was evacuated before the British troops advancing in large numbers.

Economy and Transport

Taveta is a place of trade between Kenya and Tanzania with an outdoor market taking place twice a week, which is particularly large for a city of this size. This is supported by the connection of the border town to the connection line of the Uganda Railway Moshi – Voi .

Taveta is growing fast. The district has a population growth rate of 1.7%.
