Team Malizia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The team Malizia is a yacht syndicate based in Monaco .

It was founded in 2016 by Pierre Casiraghi , with Boris Herrmann as skipper . It operates the Malizia II , an Open 60 ocean-going yacht that sails under the German flag. Skippers are Boris Herrmann and Pierre Casiraghi. For Casiraghi, the naming symbolizes the deep bond between his family and the sea and is intended to honor Francesco Grimaldi , who arrived in Monaco by sea in 1297 and founded the family dynasty there. He was called La Malizia in the Monegasque language , which means "The Sly".

In November 2018 Boris Herrmann took part in the Route du Rhum with the Malizia II , a regatta from Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre . He was temporarily in the lead and after 13 days, 3 hours, 47 minutes and 30 seconds he finished fifth in the overall ranking of the IMOCA 60 category . He finished sixth in the Bermuda 1000 race in May 2019. The race starts in Douarnenez , leads around Fastnet Rock , then to the Azores and back to Brest . When participating in the Fastnet Race in 2017 and 2019, the team came third and ninth in the IMOCA 60 class.

Herrmann's participation in the prestigious Vendée Globe (as the first German) is planned in 2020 with the Malizia II . Participation in the Ocean Race has been announced for 2021 .

In addition to the sporting goals, Casiraghi and Herrmann also define three social goals as the team's task: research , environmental protection and youth work.

There is a one cubic meter device (OceanPack RACE by SubCtech) with sensors on board to record water values. A hose leads into the seawater through an opening in the keel, which pumps seawater to the sensors. These continuously measure the temperature, the pH value , the salt and the CO 2 content of the water. The data is mainly collected to support marine research . The recorded data can be copied to a storage medium for further analysis. There is a collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg and the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel. The Ocean Challenge campaign also aims to raise schoolchildren's awareness of marine and climate protection .
