Malizia II , formerly Gitana 16 , is an open sea yacht of the boat class Open 60 . It is operated by the Malizia team and runs under the German flag. Skippers are Boris Herrmann and Pierre Casiraghi .

The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg used the yacht in August 2019 for the trip to the UN climate summit 2019 in New York.

The boat

The Einrumpfyacht (Engl. Monohull) Malizia II was by design VPLP and Guillaume Verdier designed and in the shipyard MULTIPLAST SAS in Vannes built. It belongs to the boat class Open 60 and has a tilting keel and hydrofoils , so-called hydrofoils or foils . The yacht is one of the first of the Open 60 class, which sails with the help of foils. The wings develop an upward lifting force of five to six tons and can lift the entire hull out of the water. The boat hull was made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic . The top speed of 25  knots can be reached at a wind speed of 22 knots, making the boat one of the fastest boats in its class. The mast has a height of 29 meters in accordance with the class rules, the length of the boat is 18.28 meters (60  feet ).

Gitana 16 cockpit

The launch took place on August 7, 2015. The boat was christened Gitana 16 , but then also called Edmond de Rothschild . The first owner was Team Gitana , founded in 2000 by the French banker Benjamin de Rothschild . The Gitana 16 was entrusted to the French professional sailor Sébastien Josse , who competed with it at the Vendée Globe 2016-2017. The boat was then stationed at the port of Lorient . 40 knots of wind and eight meter high waves caused considerable damage to the foils during the Vendée Globe and forced Josse to give up in December 2016. At this point he was in third place. In 2017, the Stuttgart real estate entrepreneur Gerhard Senft bought the boat. It is located in Monaco , has been colored and renamed Malizia II .

The regulations for the IMOCA competition class require that the boat be equipped with an engine that can propel the boat at a speed of 5 knots in each direction for a period of 5 hours. This requirement is currently met by a 377 kg diesel engine, which is also used to charge batteries for powering lights and electronics, and the navigation system. According to the regulations, the motor may not be used as a drive during regattas. The Malizia team plans to equip the boat with an electric motor.

As a regatta yacht, the Malizia II hardly offers any comfort on board. There are only two cane bunks , no toilet and no pantry . If the ship travels faster than 15 knots, the noise below deck becomes deafening.

power supply

In order to be able to sail in a CO 2 -neutral way, the energy supply is now ensured by a photovoltaic system specially developed for the boat and by hydrogen generators (small turbines that can be swiveled into the fairway flow at the stern ) for periods of bad weather. The solar panels total 1.149  kWp , are manufactured by the Italian manufacturer Solbian using thin-film technology and are flexible thanks to the plastic surface. The type installed in the middle of the ship has a non-slip lens structure for better accessibility; the panels glued to the deck on both sides outside the railing, on the other hand, are designed to be aerodynamically smooth. It was a particular challenge to increase the tolerance of the system by means of a geometric design against the changing shading caused by the mast and sails. 33 series ( strings ) with integrated bypass diodes deliver power to 15 step-up controllers with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), which adjust the available voltage to the 48-volt lithium-ion batteries . The plant was co-designed by the Graz-based company Sailectron, which was founded in 2014 . After a month of planning, the panels were manufactured and the system was installed in the 2018/2019 winter break on only single-axis arched parts of the deck.

Thunberg's trip to America

For her trip to the UN climate summit before and during the United Nations General Assembly from September 23 to 29, 2019 in New York City, Greta Thunberg was looking for the most climate-neutral way possible to cross the Atlantic. Herrmann and Casiraghi offered her the racing yacht for this. Thunberg also took part in climate demonstrations in the United States and Canada. She wants to visit Mexico and finally attend the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference in Chile in December 2019. About two weeks were estimated for the crossing from Plymouth to New York. Her father Svante Thunberg and a filmmaker went on board. The Atlantic crossing started on August 14, 2019. Skipper Herrmann accompanied the trip with texts, pictures and videos on social media; Ship telemetry and weather conditions including the route were made available online as an interactive map view. On August 28, 2019, the climate activist arrived in New York and was greeted by numerous sympathizers.

To save weight, the five crew members ate mainly expedition dry food from bags, the preparation only required hot water. There was a gas stove on board to heat water. They obtained drinking water using a seawater desalination plant . They used a Pütz for excretion .
