The Teatru Manoel in Valletta , Malta has been a performing stage since 1732 . Malta's National Theater is one of Europe's oldest theaters . It is considered to be the third oldest recorded theater in the world and the oldest in the Commonwealth .

history

The Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena had the Teatru Manoel built in 1731 according to his will “for the honorable edification of the people”. The tragedy Merope by Scipione Maffei was first performed on January 9, 1732.

At the end of the 19th century the building was used as a dance hall and in the 20th century as a cinema. It served as a shelter during World War II . In 1956 the theater was nationalized. After extensive restoration, it resumed operations as the Maltese National Theater in 1960.

It specializes in the classical performing arts , but it also hosts jazz , folk, and rock concerts .

The Teatru Manoel is known for the oval auditorium , which was designed in 1844 based on the Venetian Teatro La Fenice . The interior of the baroque building has 623 seats and four tiers made of hand-painted wood. The top is gold-plated with 22 carats .
