With the appointment of Gustav Mahler as director of the house in 1897 and Heinrich Lefler as director of the interior design department in 1900 , Brioschi's independence was restricted; he now mostly carried out other people's designs. From 1903, when Alfred Roller took over the decoration business , Anton Brioschi's area of responsibility was limited to the stage-appropriate production of decorations according to Roller ’s designs.

With Anton Brioschi the era of the Brioschi family of theater painters ends; it not only determined the style and standard of Viennese furnishings, but also the taste in Central European theater. Numerous works (graphics, watercolors and oil paintings) are in museums or privately owned.
