Mirza Begić (born July 9, 1985 in Bijeljina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian basketball player of Bosnian origin. He plays mostly on the position of the center .

career

The 2.21 meter tall Mirza Begić began his career in Bosnia , with Sloboda Dita Tuzla . In 2002, the then 17-year-old moved to Slovenia , first in the second team of KK Union Olimpija and in the following season to KK Triglav Kranj . In the summer of 2004, the traditional Italian club Virtus Bologna signed the talented center, but loaned it to the Belgian first division club Huy Basket for one season . After returning to the Italians, he got hardly any match practice and his contract was dissolved before the end of the 2005/06 season. Begić returned to Slovenia, where he finally moved to Union Olimpija for the 2007/08 season after a strong season at Geoplin Slovan . With the capital city, he was able to conquer the double of the championship and the cup in two seasons. In the summer of 2009, the traditional Lithuanian club Žalgiris Kaunas signed him . In the following season he conquered the Baltic Basketball League with his club by a 73:66 in the final against Lietuvos Rytas . In January 2011 Begić moved to the Spanish record champions Real Madrid , where he signed a contract until 2013. In the 2011/12 season he was able to win the cup with his team . At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he won the Spanish Supercup , he also reached the final of the Euroleague with Real Madrid and ended the year with a victory in the championship . Mirza Begić moved to reigning Euroleague champion Olympiacos in the summer of 2013 . He signed a two-year contract with the Greeks.

National team

Mirza Begić played with the Slovenian U-20 national team in the 2005 European Championship and finished 10th with her. At the European Basketball Championships in Lithuania in 2011 , he was in the squad of the national team of Slovenia and finished the tournament in seventh place. With 1.9 shot blocks per game, he led the tournament statistics.
