Josef von Storck
Josef Ritter von Storck (born April 22, 1830 in Vienna ; † March 27, 1902 there ) was an Austrian architect and craftsman .
Life
Storck was born in Vienna in 1830 as the son of a watchmaker . Initially he was supposed to become a designer , but in 1847 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . There he was offered a position in his studio by Eduard van der Nüll . This in turn motivated Storck to study architecture with a focus on interior decoration . As a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, Storck represented van der Nüll from 1855. A year later, Storck became a drawing teacher at the Manufactory Drawing School of the Lower Austrian Trade Association . Finally in 1862 he became a supplement for ornamental drawing at the Academy in Vienna. From 1866 to 1877 Storck worked as a lecturer in the field of ornamentation and ornamentation at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna . At the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 , Storck and Ferdinand Laufberger took over the management of the decorative decoration. With interruptions he was professor of architecture from 1868 to 1899 and at the same time director of the Museum of Applied Arts , which was also located in Vienna.
Storck was close friends with many artists of his time. He was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery in 1902.
Work and awards
Storck designed, among other things, the interiors of the Altlerchenfeld parish church , the hall of fame of the Army History Museum in the Vienna Arsenal , the interiors of the Vienna Grand Hotel and the apartment of the House of Liechtenstein over the years from 1875 to 1876. His applied arts also include design of furniture for Franz Michel, glass and metalwork for J. & L. Lobmeyr and Dziedzinski & Hanusch , textiles for Philipp Haas & Sons , Georg Bujatti and August Küfferle. Leather goods and bindings that were shaped by Storck's preoccupation with ornament are also among Storck's work. Numerous master works were also created by Storck. The master works include "Simple Furniture in the Character of the Renaissance" from 1875 and "The Plant in Art" from 1895. In 1879, he founded the Central Top Course. Three years earlier he took over the editing of “Blätter für Kunstgewerbe”; in addition, he headed the artistic studio for producing the state grades.
Josef Ritter von Storck has received several awards. In 1873 he received the Order of the Iron Crown , in 1875 he received the honorary title of government councilor , and in 1884 the honorary title of court counselor . In 1894 Storck was ennobled and in 1899 Commander of the Franz Joseph Order with a star. From 1861 he was a member of the cooperative of the visual artists of Vienna in the Künstlerhaus , in 1866 Storck became a real member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and honorary member of the Vienna and Bavarian Arts and Crafts Associations .
