The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra is a Maltese symphony orchestra .

history

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra was originally founded in 1968 as a chamber orchestra under the name Manoel Theater Orchestra . In 1997 the orchestra was renamed The National Orchestra of Malta and henceforth run as an independent body. The first chief conductor was Joseph Vella . The orchestra first performed under its current name and size in 2008 when Malta joined the European Union . The current chief conductor is Brian Schembri . In the course of its lively national and international concert activity, the orchestra has performed with renowned conductors and soloists, including Jose Carreras , Andrea Bocelli , Michelle Castelletti , Joseph Calleja , Johanna Beisteiner and Miriam Gauci .
