Ted Kirkpatrick (born May 22, 1960 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American drummer and founding member of the heavy metal band Tourniquet .

Life

Ted Kirkpatrick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he grew up. He started playing drums at the age of twelve.

He is the drummer, songwriter and founder of the Christian speed / thrash metal band Tourniquet, which he co-founded in 1990 . Before that he had briefly played in the band Trouble with Bruce Franklin . He was best known for his extraordinary way of playing drums.

Musical creation

Kirkpatrick was a drummer on all of the Tourniquet albums. He played the acoustic guitar less often .

Style of play

Ted Kirkpatrick not only connects the drums with a rhythm device, but rather a full-fledged musical instrument, which can be seen in the way he plays. He impresses with his aggressive, musical and also often unorthodox manner. It is worth highlighting his ability to maintain a background rhythm evenly while he plays many difficult polyrhythms over it. Ted Kirkpatrick has also mastered a virtuoso double bass technique.

Influences

Kirkpatrick cites various drummers as sources of inspiration for his stylistic work: Simon Phillips , Carl Palmer , Dave Weckl , Terry Bozzio and Buddy Rich . He also refers repeatedly to Scarlatti's sonatas in Bach's fugues and Beethoven's symphonies.

Ted Kirkpatrick developed his technique and style of play from other, unusual sources as well as influences from other drummers. On the one hand, he is an admirer of classical composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven . This is expressed in the songs of Tourniquet . On the other hand, he traveled a lot to Papua New Guinea , the Amazon basin of western Brazil , Malaysia , Taiwan , Ecuador , the Solomon Islands and other countries. The striking and haunting "rhythm of the jungle" had a decisive influence on him. He also owns a large collection of coffees from all over the world. This coffee can also be ordered on the Tourniquet website.
