Sports background / beginnings

Petty was an avid boxer in his youth and initially chose the career path of a professional boxer. From 1988 he switched to wrestling . Petty had his first engagement as a wrestler on June 24, 1988 when he made his debut with the American Wrestling Association . But after this performance he took a two-year break and successfully completed his studies and was a licensed nutritionist.

On March 2, 1990, Petty made his comeback as a wrestler in Japan when he appeared as the Cheetah Kid on a Big Japan Pro Wrestling TV show . Just a day later, he attended a Big Japan event. Until March 23, 1990, Petty was regularly seen on Big Japan shows and on their TV programs. He often competed there in the tag team area together with Chris Benoit .

National Wrestling Alliance / World Wrestling Federation

In late March 1990, Petty returned to the United States . He was in contact with the NWA through Big Japan, a foreign organization of the National Wrestling Alliance . From March 31, Petty was signed by the NWA subsidiary Tri-State Wrestling Alliance . He also appeared there with the ring character of the Cheetah Kid . On June 9, 1990 , Petty won his first NWA title when he defeated his opponent Tom Prichard for the local NWA American Brass Knuckles Title .

In late October 1990, Petty was loaned to the NWA for two shows in Japan hosted by the Promotion National Wrestling League . There Petty competed under the ring name The Cheetah Kid and was able to defeat Nikolai Volkoff by disqualification. After returning to the United States, Petty was now used within the NWA at their daughter World Championship Wrestling . There he made his debut on November 20, 1990 as Col. DeKlerk , when he appeared on the TV show NWA Clash of the Champions . This was followed by an appearance at the NWA-PPV NWA Starrcade 1990 and then Petty left the NWA to work in his profession as a nutritionist.

On January 9, 1993, Petty debuted under the ring name The Cheetah Kid at a house show of the World Wrestling Federation . He defeated a wrestler who appeared there as Johnny Rotten . Both found that their ring style was very similar. They decided to put together a team. That was all the easier for both of them because they had only been signed by the WWF for one appearance. For Petty followed on January 25, 1993 an appearance at the WCW, where he was defeated as The Executioner in a dark match on WCW Saturday Night a young wrestler who later became famous as Rob Van Dam .

They had their first appearance on the same day that they were actively involved in the show ECW Ultra Clash . In the ECW, both were often referred to as the brutal tag team of modern wrestling due to their risky and tough ring style and were a pioneer of the later hardcore wrestling in the tag team area. Such was Public Enemy one of the first US tag team that basically started tables and chairs in his matches. Durham and Petty had their first hardcore matches on October 1 and 2, 1993 when they were participants in the NWA Bloodfest .

There they were under contract until August 16, 1998. Occasionally they appeared during this time for a few appearances at the Century Wrestling Alliance and other independent promotions. In the WCW they were once able to win the WCW World Tag Team Championship .

On February 16, 1999, Public Enemy made its debut in the WWF, where it was integrated into the short-lived Hardcore Division . After a few appearances Durham and Petty left the World Wrestling Federation on March 30, 1999 after they were defeated by Team Xtreme .

National Wrestling Alliance / Independent

After their departure from the WWF, Durham and Petty started again on June 17, 1999 in the independent wrestling scene including the NWA. So they entered the promotion NWA New England , which was formed from the Century Wrestling Alliance . They were also booked again for numerous appearances in the WCW.
