The pond mites of the genus Limnesia from the family Limnesiidae belong to the freshwater mites (Hygrobatoidea). They are among the most common water mites in Central Europe .
Depending on the species, the animals can be dark red, light red or gray to green. The species themselves differ from each other except in their coloring only in details such as the bristling of the legs or the palps . The latter are very well trained and long. Pond mites hunt other mites, which they grab with their palps. They live in stagnant waters and most of the species are quite common and widespread.
