Teleclos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Teleklos ( Greek Τήλεκλος Tḗleklos , German 'the well-known' ) was the son of Archelaus in Greek mythology and the eighth or ninth king of Sparta from the house of the Agiads , depending on whether or not Menelaus is counted as king.

From Nedon he settled Poiessa in Messenia , Eschiai and Tragium. From the Achaeans he conquered the cities of Amyklai , Pharis and Geranthrai, with the latter two surrendering without a fight. During his reign Nicandros became king of the Eurypontid family .

When Teleklos went to the temple of Artemis Limnatis , which was used by both the Messenians and the Lacedaemonians , he was murdered there by the Messenians. The Lacedaemonians claimed that the Messenians had harassed Lacedaemon girls, when Teleklos tried to protect them, he was killed by the attackers. The girls then committed suicide. The Messenians, on the other hand, said that Teleklos had come to the temple with young men disguised as girls in order to kill noble Messenian people. The Messenians would have resisted and Teleklos would have been killed.

After Jerome he ruled for 40 years. A heroon was set up for him in Sparta . He was succeeded by his son Alkamenes .
