Telemann Chamber Orchestra Michaelstein
The Telemann Chamber Orchestra Michaelstein is a chamber orchestra based in Blankenburg (Harz) .
history
The orchestra was founded as "Collegium musicum" in 1952 by Eitelfriedrich Thom in Blankenburg (Harz) . In 1965 it got its current name. It was closely connected with Michaelstein Monastery . On June 30, 1968, it played for the first time in the monastery refectory.
As the accompanying orchestra of numerous musicological workshops, it has been able to distinguish itself especially in performance practice since the 1970s. On September 1, 1989, a baroque ensemble of the Telemann Chamber Orchestra, permanently employed at the institute of the Michaelstein Monastery , was founded. The orchestra performed concerts on both modern and historical instruments until 1995. From 1996 the “modern” line-up could no longer play due to a lack of state subsidies. The baroque cast increasingly distinguished themselves as specialists in baroque music with numerous CD recordings and concerts.
At that time the musicians became partners in their orchestra, which continued to receive support from the Michaelstein Monastery Foundation. In 2001 there was a break between the shareholders. Eitelfriedrich Thom's widow, Maria Thom, and the bassoonist Thomas Göbel took over the naming rights and continued to run the orchestra with modern instruments without being tied to the Michaelstein monastery.
The remaining musicians continue to work with historical instruments as the "Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein". The Michaelstein Monastery Foundation positioned itself to the disadvantage of the Telemann Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra lost its connection to the monastery, but continues to make music in the city of Blankenburg.
