Dieter Gutknecht (musicologist)

Dieter Gutknecht (* 1942 ) is a German musicologist and former university music director .

Life

Gutknecht began his studies in school music with a focus on performance practice of early music , violin and conducting at the State University of Music Cologne . During this time he studied musicology , German literature and philosophy in Cologne and Vienna . He passed his state examination in 1968 and his doctorate in 1971. His research topic was investigations into the melody of the Huguenot psaltery , using the computer. In 1992 Gutknecht completed his habilitation with studies on the history of performance practice in early music (1993, 1997).

Dieter Gutknecht was University Music Director at the University of Cologne . At the same time he taught as a lecturer at the Musicological Institute of Cologne University from 1970 until his retirement in 2008.

Gutknecht has published numerous articles on the topics of performance practice , ornamentation and personal articles in Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG), on the performance of early music , on the work of Karlheinz Stockhausen , Morton Feldmans , Sofia Asgatowna Gubaidulina , contemporary music and the relationship between music and art /Architecture.

He held conducting in France , Holland and Poland , concentrating on the great oratorios of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel .
