Telebasel is a regional Swiss television broadcaster. On June 14, 1993, Telebasel broadcast the first program. Telebasel is the only Swiss regional television broadcaster that has no publishing house or private investors behind it. The station is financially, economically and politically independent. Around 60% of the funding comes from advertising, sponsorship and TV production services. 40% of the financing is provided by public service funds from the OFCOM license and the cable networks in Basel, Allschwil (BL) and Schönenbuch (BL). The range of Telebasel is around 101,000 people daily. In the second half of 2014, Telebasel had the largest daily reach per broadcasting area in terms of percentage and had the largest market share of all licensed German-speaking regional television channels in Switzerland.

precursor

In 1989, TeleRegio started a local television trial in the Basel area as a licensed trial license. The carrier was the Basler Regionalfernsehen association . The station was called TeleRegio and broadcast a half-hour regional news magazine from March 9th to 13th from 7:00 pm. The program was designed jointly by private partners and Swiss Television SRG.

history

As the last major city in Switzerland, Basel did not have a cable network for broadcasting TV signals in the mid-1980s. In 1987, the authorities awarded the cabling contract to a consortium. At the same time, a foundation was given responsibility for the programs and content to be distributed. The then Secretary of the Economic and Social Department, Hans Martin Tschudi , successfully came up with the idea of using part of the cable network income to support a regional broadcaster. The city canal, later Telebasel, was born.

In 1991 the city channel received a test permit and went on air in June 1993 with the news magazine “7vor7”. “7vor7” was the first daily news magazine on a Swiss regional television station.

In 1997 the name was changed. The city canal became Telebasel.

On July 31, 1999, Willy Surbeck replaced Rolf Schrag as the new managing director.

Telebasel building at Steinenschanze in Basel

In 2007 Telebasel relocated broadcasting from Austrasse to Steinenschanze in Basel. In 2007, Telebasel was the first Swiss broadcaster to switch its program from the 4: 3 aspect ratio to the 16: 9 format.

On March 13, 2008, the Board of Trustees confirmed Stephan Fricker as the new Chairman of the Committee of the Basel Cable Network Foundation. His predecessor, Professor Heinrich Löffler, was retired after a quarter of a century of presidency in the Telebasel steering committee. On April 1, 2008, the previous function of managing director and editor-in-chief was split between two people for the first time in the history of Telebasel. Dominik Prétôt became the new managing director.

On July 8, 2008, the Federal Office of Communication Telebasel opened the granting of the annual broadcasting license, which is worth CHF 2.5 million.

In 2013, the “Cable Network Foundation” was renamed “Telebasel Foundation”, followed by a total revision of the foundation statutes, a downsizing of the foundation council, the implementation of comprehensive regional support and the reorganization of the management. The foundation experienced the most far-reaching changes in its history and paved the way for a new strategy and organizational structure for the station.

On June 14, 2013 Telebasel celebrated its 20th birthday with an all-day live program.

In February 2014, the previous managing director Dominik Prétôt became CEO of Telebasel. The previous dual leadership of managing director and editor-in-chief has been replaced by the new model.

In August 2014, Willy Surbeck resigned from his position as editor-in-chief of Telebasel. Karin Müller became the new editor-in-chief.

In February 2015 Telebasel expanded the transmission area across the border to Germany.

At the end of January 2016, Telebasel changed its corporate design and started many new programs in the new design. For example, the news program “7vor7” was replaced by “Telebasel News”. The previous talk format “061Live” is now called “Telebasel Talk”. Other formats such as the cinema format "Series 8" and "Kitchen Stars" were introduced.
