Hans Martin Tschudi (born October 7, 1951 in Grabs , legal domicile in Basel and Schwanden GL ) is a Swiss lawyer and former politician ( DSP ). From 1994 to 2005 he was a member of the government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt .

Life

He was born as the third son of pastor Felix Tschudi . Tschudi put 1970 his Matura at the Humanities College, today Gymnasium am Münsterplatz in Basel and studied from 1970 to 1975 at the University of Basel Law . From 1975 to 1981 he completed various internships with lawyers, companies and in administration. During this time he received his doctorate in 1979 on the subject of the design of employment relationships by the social partners in the Swiss construction industry, illustrated by the development of the national shell contract for the Swiss civil engineering, carpentry, stone-cutting and quarrying industry 1938–1976 and stayed in 1980 for a study visit at Harvard University in USA. In 1989 he completed the Swiss courses for corporate management (SKU) . From 1981 to 1994 Tschudi was Secretary General of the Economic and Social Department of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

In 2005 he took over the management of the SBB Regional Transport Northwestern Switzerland, but resigned from his position after just one year. He has been a partner in a law firm since 2006 and lectures as a lecturer for cross-border cooperation at the Universities of St. Gallen (2006 - 2017) and Strasbourg and at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland . Together with Kerstin von derecken (formerly Odendahl), Benjamin Schindler and Christoph Errass, he is the editor of the publications on cross-border cooperation at Dike Verlag , Zurich / St. Gallen.

He has been president of the Collegium Musicum Basel symphony orchestra since 2006 . In September 2018 he founded his own consulting company.

Tschudi lives with his family in Riehen . He is married to the pharmacist Barbara Tschudi geb. Denzler and has a son. Hans Martin Tschudi is a nephew of former Federal Councilor Hans-Peter Tschudi .

politics

Hans Martin Tschudi was elected to the Grand Council as a representative of the SP in 1980, but resigned from this office when he became General Secretary of the Economic and Social Department. In 1984 he became a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and served as President of the Synod from 1990 to 1993. In 1994 he was elected to the government council as successor to Karl Schnyder and was in charge of the justice department during his entire term of office. As Justice Director he was also responsible for (tri-national) foreign policy . In this function he was the Swiss delegation leader in the DF-CH-Oberrheinkonferenz from 1998 to 2005 and its President in 1999, 2001 and 2004. From 2000 to 2005 he was also a member of the Swiss delegation and since 2002 Vice-President in the Congress of Municipalities and Council of Europe regions .

At the end of 2004 it was not confirmed in the first round of general renewal elections. Surprisingly, he did not run for the second ballot and left the government at the end of his term in spring 2005.

Hans Martin Tschudi was politically considered to be a middle-class man who considered himself socially liberal. During Tschudi's term of office, his department worked on the new Basel cantonal constitution.

Tschudi's long tenure in government meant that he - often just called HaMaTschu in Basel - was often the subject of schnitzel banks at Basel Carnival .
