From 1955 to 1963 Schnyder was treasurer of the Basel section of the Association of Trade, Transport and Food Workers (VHTL) and secretary of the SP-Jugend Schweiz . From 1960 to 1966 Schnyder served as a substitute judge at the appellate court . From 1963 to 1964 he headed the party secretariat of the SP Basel-Stadt.

From 1964 to 1976 Schnyder was secretary of the Swiss Association of Public Service Personnel (VPOD). At the same time he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt . There he presided over the accounting commission from 1968 to 1976. From 1975 to 1978 he represented the SP in the National Council . From 1976 to 1994 Schnyder was a member of the government of the canton of Basel-Stadt and headed the police and military departments. He then worked as ombudsman for the Basel-Stadt Wirteverband. In 1994 he was succeeded by Hans Martin Tschudi (DSP) in the government council.

In connection with the youth unrest of the early 1980s, Schnyder fell out with the SP. In 1980 he represented tough police operations against demonstrators and rioters, while the majority of the party protested against it. After rumors of an expulsion from the party, an “action group of social democrats and trade unionists” was formed in the SP, which Schnyder supported. In 1982 he founded the Democratic Social Party with supporters, of which he was a member of the board and management until 1996.

From 1955 Schnyder was married to Irma Martha Seiler, daughter of the tram driver Alfred Seiler. Another daughter of Alfred Seiler was married to Carl Miville (SP). This replaced Schnyder in 1978 in the National Council.
