Temnostethus gracilis is a bug fromthe flower bug family (Anthocoridae).

features

The bugs are 2.3 to 2.6 millimeters long. Like most representatives of their genus, they have regressed (brachyptere) wings, but there are also specimens with fully developed (macropter) wings in both sexes. You can recognize the species by the narrow front collar and the bent back sides of the pronotum . The hemielytres are completely shiny and, including the membranes, largely brown in color. The middle part of the second antenna segment is lighter in color than the other antennae, which are predominantly dark brown.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe, with the exception of the Mediterranean countries, and occurs east to Siberia and the Caucasus. It was introduced into Canada by humans. In Germany it is widespread and also widespread in the high areas of the low mountain ranges. They are more common in the north than in the south. The species is rare in Austria.

Way of life

The animals live on the bark of various deciduous trees, both on those that are densely overgrown with lichens and mosses, as well as on those that are completely smooth, such as young red beeches ( Fagus sylvatica ), common ash trees ( Fraxinus excelsior ) or aspens ( Populus tremula ). They predatorily live on aphids , leaf fleas , dust lice and mites, but also on other small arthropods. They are tolerated by ants on the trunks. The adults can be found almost all year round, the nymphs in May and June. The adults of the new generation appear from June. Hibernation takes place as an imago, with mating taking place before that and the embryos in the eggs develop within the ovaries of the females in winter. One generation is trained every year.
