BW

The Temple du Bas (also Temple Neuf ) is a baroque church building in the old town of Neuchâtel in Switzerland .

history

The church was created in an age of increased immigration of Huguenots from the Royaume de la France . The architect Joseph Humbert-Droz was inspired for the construction of this church by the Huguenot architecture of the Martinskirche in Montbéliard . The building was erected between 1695 and 1697 and in 1703 a choir with a gallery was added.

description

The facades are designed on two floors, with the lower floor showing the portals and small oculi . The floor above is characterized by arched windows. A baroque roof turret sits on the hipped roof , as it often appears in the 18th century in what is now French- speaking Switzerland. The simple rectangular hall once contained an angled hook-shaped gallery. The table for gifts was under the organ loft in the choir, the pulpit on the central axis of the long side.

Today the church is mainly used as a concert hall and has been converted into a longitudinal hall accordingly. The gallery on the long side was demolished and instead a gallery was built on the narrow side, under which a foyer is located.
