Tempur
Tempur (also TEMPUR ) is the registered trademark for a memory foam material. The trademark holder is Tempur-Pedic .
The material memory foam , a shape memory polymer based on polyurethane , was developed in the 1970s by NASA at its research center in California . The exact composition of the polymers is kept secret. The aim of the development was to improve seating comfort and protection against pressure in spacecraft . Any use beyond the space was possible because of the low production only limited and restricted primarily to medical cushions and mattresses for pressure ulcers - prevention .
After lengthy and intensive material and production developments in Denmark , the “space foam” technology was ready for series production in 1991 . Since then, Tempur products have been available both for private use and in the medical sector (hospitals, clinics and nursing homes).
In 1996, Tempur-Pedic was granted the Space Foundation license to advertise with the official seal of Certified Space Technology . This seal is awarded to products that originate from American space research or are used in space travel.
The Federal Cartel Office has convicted the manufacturer Tempur of illegal price fixing and imposed a fine of 15 million euros. The Tempur company has therefore urged competitors to inflate minimum prices.
