geography

The Tengawai River is created by the confluence of the Duck Stream with the Hayter Stream at the southwest end of the Albury Range, which is up to 1,323  m high . From there the river swings after a left bend in an easterly direction, then flows 2.8 km north of the small settlement Albury for about 13 km to the south-southeast. At the small settlement of Cave, the Tengawai River then bends to the east-northeast and finally flows into the Opihi River as a right tributary at Pleasant Point .

From north of Albury to Pleasant Point , the Tengawai River is accompanied on the right by New Zealand State Highway 8 .

Tributaries of the Tengawai River are the Little Opawa River , Opawa River, and Rocky Gully River, as well as some smaller streams .
