The Opihi River is an approximately 80 km long river in the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The headwaters of the Opihi River is not clearly defined and is located in the Rollesby Valley , south of Burkes Pass and the New Zealand State Highway 8, which runs over it . If you follow the most distant source of the numerous streams from there, the source of the river would have to be on the eastern flank of the Rollesby Range , which is up to 1,377  m high . From the slopes of the Rollesby Range and the Rollesby Valley , the river follows the path northwards along Burkes Pass and then in a right curve in a south-easterly direction, passing the town of Fairlie . Flowing further in a south-easterly direction, the Opihi River passes the places Pleasant Point and Temuka and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean after a total of approx. 80 km long river course 14 km northeast of Timaru .

The Opihi River is successively fed by the Opuha River , Tengawai River and Temuka River as well as numerous small streams and creeks to its mouth .
