History and today

Fairlie is known as a service center for the surrounding agriculture and as the gateway to the Mackenzie Basin . Initially the place was called Fairlie's Creek and is said to have got its name from early settlers who reminded the area of Fairlie in Scotland .

From 1884 to 1968 the city was connected to the Fairlie Branch , a branch of the Main South Line . By 1934, however, this ended one kilometer from Fairlie in Eversley .

The place hosts the Mackenzie District Agricultural and Pastoral show annually on Easter Monday . This event celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001.

With the city on the tourist-frequented route between Christchurch and Queenstown , tourism is playing an increasing role.
