Temuka is a small town in the Timaru District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the city is believed to be an abbreviation of the term “te umu-kaha” , which comes from the Māori language and means “the strong earth furnace”. The Māori prepared their meals in earth ovens (see Hāngi ).
geography
The city is located around 17 km north of Timaru and 53 km southwest of Ashburton at the confluence of the Hae Hae Te Moana River and the Waihi River , which form the Temuka River . After just 6.7 km southeast of the city, this flows into the Opihi River , which passes the city to the south and finds its entrance to the Pacific Ocean around 6 km southeast .
history
A Pā (village) of the Māori tribe of the Ngāi Tahu used to exist at the site of today's city . The European settlement of the area began in 1853 by the settler William Hornbrook , the riverside of the Opihi River , a camp built. When the land for a city was measured east of today's railway line, the name of the Māori - Pā , Arowhenua was initially adopted . In 1863 the surveyor Samuel Hewlings , who had drawn up the plan of the future city, bought an adjacent area, which he gave the place name Wallingford . Around 1866, the name Temuka became established for the two nearby settlements, which were then formally merged in 1899.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 4,047 inhabitants, 0.07% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
The city is known for the manufacture of clay and ceramic products, as well as ceramic insulators. For the surrounding area, the city is a supply center for daily and agricultural needs. The dairy industry plays an important role in the area, alongside sheep breeding, grain and horticulture. In December 2016, the New Zealand company Fonterra announced that it would build a mozzarella factory near Temuka for NZ $ 240 million , which the company claims will be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
Furthermore, in Temuka the transport company Temuka Transport settled that the southern part of more than 40 trucks Canterbury served. Another company called Temuka Homeware makes ceramic dishes.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Temuka , which connects the city directly to Timaru and connects to Ashburton to the northeast .
Rail transport
The South Island Main Trunk Railway runs parallel to State Highway 1 and has a train station with a stop in the city.
Education
The city has two primary schools and one secondary educational institution. With Temuka Primary School , it has a primary school with grades 1 to 6. In 2015, 225 students attended the school. Another primary school is the Catholic St Joseph's School, with grades 1 to 8. In 2015, 98 students attended the school.
