Teodoras Brazys

Teodoras Brazys (born November 20, 1870 in Memelhof near Bauska , Koknese , now Mazzalvė , Latvia , † September 10, 1930 in Munich ) was a Lithuanian Catholic prelate, composer, organist, choir conductor, music teacher and musicologist.

Life

He graduated from the German Bauska School and learned to play the organ in Pabiržė . He attended the music school in Rokiškis , took lessons from Juozas Kalvaitis, the organist of Kaunas Cathedral , and worked as an organist in Josvainiai , Pabiržė and Žvingiai . From 1896 to 1900 he studied at the seminary in Vilnius and from 1905 to 1907 at the church music college in Regensburg . From 1907 to 1917 he taught at the Vilnius Seminary, from 1921 at the Merkinė Progymnasium , from 1923 he taught at the Kaunas Seminary , and in 1924 he became a lecturer at the Lietuvos universitetas , where he also worked as a choirmaster.

He wrote liturgical works, including four masses, and collected 2,000 Lithuanian folk songs, 150 of which were harmonized.

His tomb is in Kaišiadorys .
