Teodoro Picado Michalski

Teodoro Picado Michalski (born January 10, 1900 in San José , † June 1, 1960 in Managua ) was President of Costa Rica .

Life

His parents were Jadwisia Michalska Wodziwoska and Teodoro Picado Marín. His brother was René Picado Michalski

In 1926 he married Mercedes Lara Fernández for the first time. In 1937 he married Etelvina Ramírez Montiel for the second time.

He was director of the Instituto de Alajuela . He later became a legal expert and teacher at the law school. He was a gifted narrator and wrote essays .

He was education minister and member of parliament for San José. Chairman of a constituent assembly. Deputy President Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia . In this role he was a presidential candidate in the 1944 elections. His electoral alliance was the Bloque de la Victoria an electoral alliance from the communist Vanguardia Popular led by Manuel Mora Valverde and the Partido Republicano Nacional , led by Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia.

Presidency

During his presidency, Costa Rica became a founding member of the United Nations. An electoral law and a tax law were passed. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional was founded.

In 1947 there was a Huelga de brazos caídos strike, which had electoral fraud as an issue. As a result, the electoral authority, Tribunal Electoral, was set up and a number of mechanisms to monitor elections were introduced for the February elections. When the opposition candidate Otilio Ulate Blanco from the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones declared him the elected candidate, the parliament did not appoint him as president by law, but canceled the election because of alleged electoral fraud; the simultaneous parliamentary elections, however, were not contested because they were the previous governing coalition confirmed.

Civil war

The supporters of José Figueres Ferrer made an armed uprising.

Teodoro Picado Michalski sought support from Anastasio Somoza García . On April 17, 1948, Anastasio Somoza García had the Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua attacked Villa Quesada from the air against the opposition of the USA . Under pressure from the USA, the Guardia Nacional had to withdraw on April 19, 1948. On April 19, 1948, an agreement to end the civil war was signed in the Mexican embassy in San José. On April 20, 1948, Teodoro Picado Michalski handed over his office to the third deputy Santos León Herrera and left Costa Rica for Nicaragua.

In 1948 he settled in Managua and worked as a journalist.

1955 tried again Teodoro Junior, the son of Teodoro Picado Michalski, who had graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1951 , to usurp power, and also failed.
