Teresa Riera Madurell (born October 13, 1950 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish scientist and politician ( PSOE ) and has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2004 European elections .

Scientific career

After studying mathematics , which she graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1974 , Riera worked as a research assistant at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and received her doctorate in 1981. After a research stay at the University of California , she became a lecturer at the UPC in 1983. In 1988 she became Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of the Balearic Islands , where she was Associate Vice Rector from 1991 to 1994 and from 1996 headed a summer school for Gender Studies .

Political career

Shortly after the end of Franco's dictatorship and the re-admission of political parties, Riera joined the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC), the Catalan sister party of the Spanish social democratic party PSOE, in 1978 . In 1980 she also became a member of the education union FETE, which is part of the PSOE-affiliated union UGT .

After moving to the Balearic Islands , Riera was communications officer from 1988-1991 and equal opportunities officer of the Balearic Regional Association of the PSOE from 1991-1994. She was also a member of the regional parliament of the Balearic Islands from 1989. In 1994 she became president of the Balearic PSOE. She was also a member of the island government of Mallorca .

In 1996 Riera became a member of the Spanish-wide party executive committee of the PSOE and in the same year she entered the Congreso de Diputados in the Spanish parliamentary elections , of which she was a member until 2004. From 2000 she was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO .

In the European elections in 2004 and again in 2009 , she was elected to the European Parliament . Here she belongs to the social democratic group S&D and is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy .
