Terra de Ninguém (German: No man's land ) is a documentary film by the Portuguese director Salomé Lamas from 2012. It premiered on October 24, 2012 as part of the Doclisboa film festival at Culturgest in Lisbon .

action

In the film, 66-year-old Paulo de Figueiredo tells of his transformation from a soldier in the war in Angola to a mercenary. The strictly formal film with numbered scenes reproduces the five interviews that the director conducted with him between autumn 2011 and spring 2012.

On the first day, Paulo talks about his time as a soldier in the Portuguese army in Angola, which ended in 1974 with the Carnation Revolution and the withdrawal of Portuguese troops from the country. In post-revolutionary Portugal he worked as a bodyguard, including for Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro . The interview on the second day revolves around his time as a mercenary in Rhodesia and El Salvador. On the third day, he describes his murder assignments as a member of the anti-Basque underground organization GAL , his arrest in Spain and his conviction. In the fourth day interview, the director approaches Paulo's childhood, which he spent mainly in Angola. When he starts talking about his family, Paulo leaves his chair to smoke a cigarette in the garden.

For the fifth interview, the director visits Paulo under a bridge where he lives in a tent. Questions about his identity arise because his name cannot be proven in official documents. In a later phone call, Paulo promises to produce the documents. Then the contact with him breaks off.

reception

The film won the national competition of the Doclisboa film festival in 2012 .
