Terrifier is a 2016 American slasher film directed by Damien Leone . The film is based on the character of Art the Clown from a short film by Leone, which he made into two short films as well as his episodic horror film All Hallows' Eve - Come out and play! (2013) introduced.

Monica, a talk show host, is killed by a badly deformed young woman after an interview. She suffered the injuries on a Halloween night a year ago. The killer clown Art the Clown , who is said to have died that night, was responsible.
A year earlier: Tara Heyes and her friend Dawn are celebrating Halloween. Since both can no longer drive, they decide to have something to eat at a nearby pizzeria. While they are still in the car, they notice a strange clown who seems to be watching them motionlessly. He follows them to the pizzeria, where he behaves strangely. Dawn provokes him. After he doesn't want to eat in the pizzeria, he is thrown out by the owner. After dinner, the two friends leave the pizzeria and return to their car, where they find that their tire has been punctured. Meanwhile, Art kills the two employees at the diner. Since the spare tire is not available, they decide to call Victoria, Tara's sister. After Tara's persuasion, she sets off. Meanwhile, the clown kills the pizzeria.
Tara has to go to the toilet. She persuades an exterminator to unlock the toilet in the nearby warehouse. As she goes about her business, Dawn learns over the car radio that a killer clown is roaming the streets. But it's too late to warn her friend because Art is already there and kidnapping her.
In the warehouse, Tara meets a mysterious and obviously crazy cat woman. Then she is overwhelmed by Art and wakes up tied to a chair. There she has to watch her friend being dismembered by Art. She manages to break free, but her escape ends with being shot.
Meanwhile Victoria is also arriving. She manages to gain access to the warehouse and quickly meets Art, who kills her sister right in front of her eyes. At some point she meets Mike, who informs the police, but is also killed a short time later. The cat woman suffers the same fate. Victoria is struggling to survive. Just as the clown crushes her face, the police arrive at the scene and Art shoots himself. Victoria survives seriously injured. She is the woman from the beginning of the film. Art is taken to the morgue, where he comes to life after a mysterious power failure.

Art, the clown, made his first appearance in the short film The 9th Circle by Damien Leone from 2008. In 2011 a short film called Terrifier followed . Both became part of the episode film All Hallows' Eve (along with another episode) - Come out and play! .
The film premiered on October 15, 2016 at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival. For the German version, which was released on December 6, 2018 via Tiberius Media as DVD and Blu-Ray, the film was cut by 1 minute and 42 seconds. An uncut version was released in 2018 via Nameless Media.

“The story is not new, not even groundbreaking, but the stringent implementation tears it out again. It doesn't last long, but there is a lot of shouting, stabbing, cutting and murder. (...) With 'Terrifier', Art, the Clown has murdered its way up into the top league of killer clowns. That should be enough to dedicate more films to him. He doesn't just have to be up to mischief on Halloween. "

In July 2019 it was announced that Damien Leone was working on a sequel to Terrifier , for which he is again responsible for the direction and the script. Even David Howard Thornton is as kind the Clown return. Via crowdfunding on Indiegogo , the donation goal of 50,000 US dollars, which was needed to produce the film, was reached after just three hours. A first trailer for Terrifier 2 was released in July 2020.
