Four people were murdered and 19 injured in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on June 8, 2016 .

Sequence of events

At around 9:30 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. CEST ), the Palestinians Khalid al-Mahmara and Mohammed Moussa Mahmara opened fire in Café Max Brenner with Carl Gustaf M / 45 replicas in the Tel Aviv Sarona Market . Three victims died instantly, a fourth later; among them the professor at Ben Gurion University , Michael Feige.

One of the assassins was shot by a guard from Kol Israel who was present and held until the police arrived. The other fled unarmed, mistakenly hid in a policeman's house, and was later arrested by the policeman.

Perpetrator

The assassins Khalid Al-Mahmara and Mohammed Moussa Mahmara are cousins, were 21 years old at the time of the crime and come from Jatta , south of Hebron . Her uncle Taleb Mahmara committed a terrorist attack in 2002 as a member of the Fatah offshoot Tanzim , in which four people were killed. Taleb was convicted and imprisoned, and his house was demolished. Khalid was a student at Mutah University in Jordan . He took the engineering course . Khalid and Mohammed entered the country illegally through a gap in the Israeli barrier near Meitar .

A suspected third party was arrested the day after the attack.

Reactions

The Israeli government revoked after the fact 83,000 entry permits, the occasion of Ramadan had been issued, but allowed thousands of Palestinians to enter without this official entry permit. On June 10, 2016, the UNHCHR Commissioner for Human Rights Seid al-Hussein criticized the revocation of entry permits by the United Nations as a possible collective punishment prohibited under international law . In addition, on June 10 , the Israel Defense Forces closed the border crossings to the Palestinian Territories in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank . Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced on the same day that the bodies of assassins killed in attacks would be retained. The Israeli work permits of members of the assassin's family have been revoked. Officials of the security authorities assured the removal of the remaining gaps in the Israeli barrier. Ron Huldai , the mayor of Tel Aviv , referred to the situation of the Palestinians: "It is impossible to keep people under occupation and to believe that they will accept to go on living like this."

The Hamas celebrated the attack, while the Fatah condemned him. The United Nations Secretary General , Ban Ki-moon said he was "shocked that the leaders of Hamas have decided to welcome this attack welcome and celebrate."

The father of one of the fatalities commented on the reactions of the Israeli government insofar as the policy of collective sanctions such as the sealing off of the West Bank, in particular the curfew imposed on Jatta - the place where the assassins came from - further contributed to the escalation. The decree to withhold the corpses of the perpetrators and destroy the homes of the families would "create new suffering, hatred and despair".

In memory of the murdered Michael Feige, the Ben-Gurion University donated the Michael Feige Career Development Chair in the Israeli Society to which outstanding young teachers can be appointed.
