Teshigahara Sōfū ( Japanese 勅使 河 原 蒼 風 ; * December 17, 1900 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ; † September 5, 1979 in Japan) was a Japanese painter and Ikebana teacher.

Life

Born in the year 33 of the Meiji period as the son of the ikebana artist Teshigahara Wafu, Teshigahara founded his own ikebana school Sōgetsu-ryū ( 草 月 流 , Sogetsu School of Ikebana ) in 1927 . Teshigahara's teaching approach was that, after having learned all the techniques, an ikebana artist can both give space to his personal feelings when designing the ikebana arrangement and incorporate "other" material in addition to the use of plant material.

In 1952 Teshigahara was a member of the jury at the International Flower Show in New York City . In 1954 he took part in the flower exhibition on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of São Paulo in Brazil . In 1958 he founded the Sogetsu Art School .

Teshigahara Sōfū is the father of the Japanese film director Teshigahara Hiroshi, who died in 2001 . Sōfū died in 54 of the Shōwa period .
