Tessy Thomas was born in April 1963 in Alappuzha in the southern Indian state of Kerala as the daughter of a Syrian-Christian family. She was named Tessy after Mother Teresa . The information about the professional activity of her father is contradictory, so he is said to have been an official of the Indian forest authority, small business owner or auditor. When Thomas was 13 years old, her father suffered a stroke that resulted in right hemiplegia. Her mother, who was actually a teacher, had to stay at home in this difficult situation to take care of the family.

Thomas grew up near the Indian space base "Thumba Rocket Launching Station" and later reported that this was where her fascination with rockets and missiles began.

Thomas has four sisters and one brother. In interviews she emphasized how important it was to her parents that their children received a good education. They always encouraged their six children to choose professions in which they could excel based on their own interests. Two of her siblings became engineers, one an economist.

Thomas blamed her hometown and her mother for her successful life: “I grew up with the great canals of Kerala as my territory. I suppose nature gives you strength and good thoughts. The power of nature cannot be without its influence on one's own development. ” About her mother, she said, “ It must have been very hard for her that she was not allowed to work because she had to take care of us. So she made sure that her five daughters and her son got a good education ... I have certainly inherited her strong will. I am as persistent and determined as my mother. "

Tessy Thomas attended St. Michael's Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph's Girl's Higher Secondary School in Alappzuha. She had a natural approach to math and physics. In the exams during the 11th and 12th grades, she achieved more than 95% in the natural sciences and always the highest possible number of points in mathematics.

She took out a monthly educational loan from the State Bank of India to begin her engineering studies at Government Engineering College in Thrissur . In addition, as one of the 10 best of the year, she received a scholarship that covered the tuition fees. This made it possible for her to live in a student dormitory during her Bachelor of Technology studies .

She earned a Master of Technology on guided missiles from the Institute of Armament Technology (today: Defense Institute of Advanced Technology ) in Pune . This was followed by a master’s degree in business administration in organization management and a Ph.D. back to guided missiles at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
