The Tetrad Islands are an archipelago consisting of four small islands in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . The islands are located southeast of Trinity Island's Borge Point .

exploration

The islands were first mapped by the Norwegian whaler Hans Borge (1873-1946), captain of the whaling ship Polynesia . Borge was whaling in this area from 1913-14 and made maps of the area. After the exploration of the area by the 6th Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1951–1952), one of the islands was named Islote Gastón , presumably named after Gastón Kulczewski Silva, who was in charge of the Arturo Prat station at the time . The northernmost and largest island was named Islote Leucotón after the Leucotón , a patrol ship of the expedition. The two smaller islands are the Islote Beltrán south of the Islote Leucotón and the so far unofficially named Islote Entrada at the southern end of the group. The islands were recorded on Argentine maps from 1952.

After the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition anfertigte 1,956 aerial photos of the islands, the archipelago was given in 1960 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) the name Tetrad Islands (from English tetrad - nibble Tetrad) as they made consists of four islands. The Argentine name is Islotes Tetraedro.
