The Teufelsrutsch is a wooded summit made of porphyry rock near Wendelsheim in Rheinhessen , which was formed by the Wiesbach in prehistoric times . The approximately 260 m above sea level. NN located plateau ends in a westerly direction with a 50 m deep slope. The name of the elevation goes back to a legend according to which the devil was tricked by the local residents into sliding down this steep, thorn-covered slope on his bare bottom. After that, he was never seen there again.

Remains of a Celtic refuge have been discovered near the Teufelslutsch .

About 20 meters below the summit is the so-called “Schinderhannes Höhle” - a walk-in, over 60-meter-long tunnel, the initial design of which refers to the 14th century. There mercury was extracted, which occurs in the form of cinnabar . The tunnel was named after the notorious robber captain Schinderhannes , for whom the tunnel is said to have served as a shelter. However, this is controversial.

The Teufelsrutschfelsen has been a popular excursion destination since the 19th century because of its delightful nature and picturesque views. In 1885 the so-called “Swiss House” was built on the summit to take care of the tourists.

The Teufelslutsch is an internationally known site for amethyst and other minerals.

Devil's slide hill climb

From 1966 to 2001, on the main road 407 between Nack that and Wendelsheim Teufelsrutsch hill climb held. The event was hosted by MSC Alzey . The route was considered to be one of the shortest and fastest routes in mountain racing. After 2001, the track was no longer approved for hill climbing. The route was 1,500 m in length, 60 m in altitude and ended at an altitude of 245  m above sea level. NHN . Ticket sales and catering were largely the responsibility of the Nacker Turn- und Sportverein TuS Nack 1957 . More than 100 TuS helpers and other volunteers were involved in the event. Among the participants were well-known motor sports enthusiasts such as Karl Jordan, Dieter Kern and Jörg Obermoser . In the course of the Rhineland-Palatinate rally , in which the race was part of a special stage, well-known starters such as the two-time rally world champion Walter Röhrl with his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer , Klaus Fritzinger , Luitpold Prince of Bavaria or Achim Warmbold found themselves .
