The Thanda Royal Zulu Football Club is a South African football club from Durban , which plays in the National First Division (South African second division).

history

In January 2004 the top of the club Hellenic FC (founded in 1958) exchanged its professional license with Benoni Premier United for bankruptcy reasons. In return, Hellenic received five million rand . This transaction took place during the current season and was officially approved by the South African Premier Soccer League. This allowed the then second division Benoni to play in the first division again. They played under the name Hellenic FC until the end of the season, but the team was already provided by Benoni Premier United. Nevertheless, the team did not manage to keep the class and was relegated. In 2006 he was promoted back to the Castle Premiership . After the 2006/07 season, the club was bought up by the South African group of companies Thanda Star Academy and its Swedish cooperation partners and renamed Thanda Royal Zulu. This also involved the move of the entire club from Benoni to Durban , KwaZulu-Natal . Both 2007 and 2008, the club was 14th in the table and thus barely escaped relegation in both seasons. In 2009 Thanda Royal Zulu didn't make it anymore and only finished 15th in the table. In the playoff games at the beginning of the following season they gambled away with a loss to the Mpumalanga Black Aces the last chance to remain in the first division and consequently relegated. The club's coach at the time was the Swede Roger Palmgren , who had already looked after the national teams of Rwanda , Sierra Leone and the Congo .

Palmgren was replaced by the former South African international and European region player Mark Fish .

In October 2007 the name was officially approved by the South African Football Association. The name of the club was also confirmed by the King of the Zulu , Goodwill Zwelethini kaBhekuzulu .

Under the old club name Benoni Premier United, the team was still nicknamed The Rabbits (The Rabbits) .
